American soldiers found embalming, holding private services for dead Taliban fighters. Afghan president ‘deeply moved.’
AFGHANISTAN—In what may be a turning point in the occupation of Afghanistan, a group of American soldiers was found embalming and holding private burial services for a group of Taliban fighters they had killed in a firefight. According to a testimony from a local shaman, the soldiers “immediately began preparations for an ancient burial” following the skirmish.
“One of the soldiers was building Canopic jars out of nothing but mud, while the others carefully removed the organs,” the shaman recalled. Afghan president Hamid Karzai was deeply moved by the act. “We can’t thank the soldiers enough for their attempts to send the Taliban’s best into the afterlife, though they certainly could have actually gotten our religious beliefs correct,” he said in a public television statement. According to Ancient Egyptian beliefs, the hearts of the Taliban fighters will now go to Ma’at, who will weigh them against a feather to decide their eternal fates.
