Punxsutawney Phil awarded honorary degree in meteorology, will join the Weather Channel.
PUNXSUTAWNEY—Moments after Punxsutawney Phil’s shadow doomed Americans to six more weeks of winter, a representative from Pennsylvania State University presented the world’s most famous groundhog with an honorary degree in meteorology. “Phil has more than proved a competency in the field of weather forecasting,” the university’s president told reporters. “If he’s just as accurate as the meteorologists we’ve graduated, does he not then deserve the same degree?” Though Punxsutawney Phil has never sat down for a single hour of lecture, professors at Penn State say he really didn’t miss much. “At the end of the day, we’re all just guessing,” Dr. James Ulrich, a professor in meteorology, explained.
“Sure, we’ll throw a lot of interesting words and phrases at our students; maybe show them how to compose themselves in front of a green screen. The rest is just fluff.” Following the announcement, the groundhog met with Michael Kelly, president and CEO of the Weather Channel. “We’d really love to have him on board,” Kelly said in a studio interview. “He’s a model candidate for the quality of work we do here.” While ‘Dr. Phil’ will continue his duties as Punxsutawney Phil each February 2nd, he’ll spend the rest of his year forecasting hurricanes in battered Latin American nations. “We can’t imagine entrusting the lives of hundreds of thousands to anyone else,” Kelly added.
